Floored by Tupakula Munemma’s story and the leadership qualities she displayed in real life, PRP president Chiranjeevi asked her to be ready to contest the next polls and enter the Assembly. “We need real life leaders in politics, too. Everyone should take inspiration from her courage and self confidence,” Chiranjeevi said at a meeting organised by the women’s wing of PRP on “Empowering Women” on Sunday. The tiny, frail and unpretentious Yanadi woman stunned the organisers by posing embarrassing questions like where was the PRP born. When the gathering of city-bred middle class women said,” among the people” as reply, Munemma corrected them by saying, the party was born in Hyderabad. “The party is not born among people. We have to take it to people. It has gone up to mandals. It is yet to reach the villages where the majority live,” she said. Questioning the motive behind the distribution of freebies like rice and gas connections, she said women should not fall for this type of politics. She urged women to preserve their self-respect. Chiranjeevi, who joined the meeting in the afternoon, said all the programmes of the party would be formulated keeping women in mind. “Insecure social and economic environment in the state is ruining families. The spiralling prices are unsettling the middle class life, the brunt of which is being borne by women’” he said. On the question of party’s commitment on 33.3 per cent seats for women, he said the feasibility of such a demand has to be studied thoroughly. He however, assured that women’s representation in PRP would be more than any other party in the state. “There is no need for new schemes. We will continue whatever is being implemented. But we will implement them in a different way,” he said. Chaired by former MLA Shobha Nagireddy, the convention was attended by delegates from all over the state
