Hyderabad, Sep 20 (PTI) In his first public contact after entering politics, Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi on Saturday visited Siricilla town in Telangana region and met families of weavers who had committed suicide due to financial distress.
A large number of people gathered to have a glimpse of their hero as Chiranjeevi's convoy entered the backward town in Karimnagar district the hub of handloom industry, about 140 kms from here, amid tight security.
After a brief visit to the textile park, he called on three families whose bread-earners had committed suicide due to mounting to debts.
The actor was visibly moved as families poured out their woes and narrated how the successive governments have failed to address their grievances.
Clad in white shirt and black trousers, he sat on the floor along with the poor weavers and enquired about their problems.
The weavers told him they were fast losing hope in the absence of credit and marketing facilities and employment opportunities.
Later addressing a gathering, Chiranjeevi said he was deeply moved by the plight of weavers and vowed to work for the improvement of their living standards.
"I am told over 400 poor weavers have committed suicide in the last ten years. The successive governments have failed to address their problems", he said adding that his "Praja Rajyam" party would strive for their welfare.
